Waitāhuna Station Museum
The Waitāhuna Station building, a Class 5 Station built in 1877, has been in the ownership of the Rose farming family since its closure in 1968. Over the last few years it has been painstakingly restored to near original condition and is now home to a collection of Rose family heirlooms and donated items of local interest. While it remains a work in progress, the museum offers a fascinating window into the layers of local history, from the rugged days of the Gold Rush to the enduring heritage of Otago’s farming community. Visitors can explore an eclectic collection of railway artefacts and vintage agricultural and household items that tell the story of the township’s past.
A 30 minute slide show of the site’s history and restoration is on display and there are plans to add audio and video recollections of local figures.
Open during café hours, the museum provides a quiet space to discover the unique spirit of Waitāhuna. We invite you to step back in time and enjoy this growing tribute to our region’s rich and varied heritage.
